Becoming an Active Citizen

Alternative Spartan Breaks has provided me with an irreplaceable experience that I will be forever grateful for. Through this organization I have grown as a student, a leader, a problem-solver, and as an active citizen. Working alongside other students that had similar aspirations of engaging in quality service opportunities, learning about pervasive social issues, gaining exposure to diverse cultures and communities all to help promote active citizenship really enhanced my view on the importance of reflection and giving back to the community. The concept of ASB has always fascinated me. A group of students who come from different majors, clubs, classes and cultures that throughout the course of a week, transform from strangers to close-knit companions. All brought together by a shared desire to serve. As a recent graduate of MSU, I can say with certainty that the knowledge and skills that I have gained throughout my time in ASB has already positively impacted my life and my future ambitions. ASB has only cemented my desire to give back to the community and working with them to meet the needs of those who are suffering and in immediate crisis. I’ve experienced ASB through the eyes of a participant, site-leader, and E-Board and it has been one of the most meaningful journeys that have ever embarked upon.
